One of the country's most musically-enriched cities, Memphis, Tennessee is the largest city in Tennessee, and 17th largest in the nation. Located in Southwest Tennessee, Memphis sits on the eastern bank of the Mississippi River.
When you think Memphis, you probably think music - and with good reason, as it has been the starting point for numerous musicians including Justin Timberlake, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Jerry Lee Lewis, Al Green, "The Father of the Blues" W.C. Handy, "The King of the Blues" B.B. King, "The King of Country" Johnny Cash, and "The King of Rock n' Roll" Elvis Presley. Elvis' former home, Graceland, located across the street from The Heartbreak Hotel, is one of the country's most visited National Historical Landmarks. Featured at Graceland is a vast assortment of Elvis memorabilia and it is the host of numerous Elvis-related events throughout the year. If Graceland isn't calling your name, perhaps a walk down the Beale Street Walk of Fame will put you a little closer to your favorite musician. Modeled after the Hollywood Walk of Fame, it is designed exclusively for Memphis musicians, songwriters, composers, and writers. You will find squares for W.C. Handy, Bobby 'Blue' Bland, B.B. King, and Alberta Hunter among others on this strip of historic Beale Street. The Stax Museum of American Soul Music, the Memphis Rock N Soul Museum, and the Gibson Guitar Factory & Showcase are other popular music-related attractions offered in the city.
Sports fans are never bored in Memphis. Memphis is home to the NBA Memphis Grizzlies, CHL Memphis RiverKings, AF2 Memphis Xplorers, several minor league baseball teams, USA Rugby South Memphis Blues, two NASCAR events at the Memphis Motorsports Park, and two pro-wrestling organizations. No matter the time of the year, you can find a sporting event going on somewhere in Memphis.
If you are bringing the whole family, you will be anything but disappointed with a visit to Memphis. The Memphis Zoo is home to more than 3,500 animals and also features a motion simulator ride, taking the riders on a tour through time and the world, showing animals of all sorts on a screen while your seats move to create the idea of an adventure. Take a trip to the Children's Museum of Memphis where the whole family can explore the skyscraper maze, an airplane cockpit, a fire engine, an art studio, and much more. Another option is the Pink Palace Museum and Planetarium, which is the Mid-South's major science and historical museum that features America's third largest planetarium and an IMAX theater. With exhibits ranging from chemistry to archeology, the Pink Palace has something to interest everyone.
Museums are plentiful in Memphis. One of the must-visit museums is the National Civil Rights Museum. Located in the former Lorraine Motel, where Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated, the Museum displays the story of the struggle for civil rights by African Americans from the British colonies of 1619 until the untimely death of Dr. King in 1968. One of the most unique museums in the country is the National Ornamental Metal Museum, the only museum in North America dedicated to the exhibition and preservation of fine metalwork. Other museums that may interest you include the Fire Museum and the Mud Island River Park and Mississippi River Museum.
From the banks of the Mississippi to the skyscrapers of Downtown Memphis, you will never run out of things to do in the "Home of the Blues" and "Birthplace of Rock n' Roll."
